College Students

Why Nourishing Minds?

Young adults aged 18-25 face unique dietary challenges due to significant lifestyle transitions, including increased independence, busy schedules, and social pressures. Studies show that this age group is at heightened risk for weight gain, with 34.1% of college students classified as overweight or obese (Li et al., 2022). Common behaviors such as skipping meals, frequent snacking on energy-dense foods, and irregular meal patterns contribute to this trend, increasing the risk of long-term health conditions like diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and mental health disorders (Sogari et al., 2018; Wang et al., 2024). Despite positive attitudes toward healthy eating, many young adults struggle to implement consistent habits due to barriers like cost, lack of cooking skills, and time constraints (Capper et al., 2022).

At Emory University, sorority women experience additional pressures from appearance-focused social dynamics and heavy social media use, amplifying body image concerns and unhealthy eating behaviors (Skubisz et al., 2023). These factors make sorority women a high-priority group for targeted interventions that address their unique challenges while promoting healthier eating habits.

Nourishing Minds directly addresses this need by equipping sorority women with the tools and confidence to make balanced dietary choices that enhance their health and well-being.
